Jayde was still sore as she began unpacking. She frowned as she glanced over the sparse furnishings. There had not been enough time to grab anything more than some clothes and even then she hadn't been sure they would make it out of the previous residence alive. She still couldn't understand how things had gone so wrong. No one was supposed to know about the hunt except her crew and the one that hired her. The target had been waiting for them. Now, three good men were more than likely dead because of a leak. The battle had been long, two had fallen ( it was unknown if they had been dead or alive at that time ) and only she and Eric remained. Both knew it was a lost cause and she had been in no shape to argue with him when he shoved her towards the exit. It was in that moment that all the unspoken words became clear in just that one look into his eyes. Her escape had not been a smooth one as Khandi was attacked as she was gathering clothing.
She shook her head and groaned softly as she stood up to go check on Khandi. Her sister was the last person she would have expected to be hurt. She had gotten careless and instead of following her instincts she had taken the time to let Khandi grab some things. This was the second time the girl had been uprooted since their parents deaths. She smothered another small groan as she pushed open the bedroom door. Her sister appeared so small snuggled under the blankets. Limping across the room she sat down on the edge of the bed and gently laid a hand on Khandi's forehead. Although the night was warm, the girl was cool to the touch and trembled with ocassional chills. Once more she struggld to her feet and lay a soft kiss to her sisters forehead and then returned to the living room. She would place another call to the doctor in the morning.
Sitting on the couch she propped one foot and dug through her shoulder bag for her cell. It had been two weeks since that disasterous night, two weeks since Eric had pushed her away from the fight yelling at her to get her sister and leave. She knew that if he had not contacted her yet that things had gotten even uglier after she ran. That word left a sour taste in her mouth and she hated herself for abandoning him and the others like she did. Dialing his number she held her breath not even realizing she did so and as his voice mail kicked in she blinked back tears. She disconnected knowing it was pointless to leave a message then curled up to weep silently.
