Royce stood in the empty livingroom, turning in a slow circle. The boxes and furniture had been loaded up in the truck, and Kenji and the kids were waiting outside for her. She took a slow breath, closing her eyes and lowering her head.
Memories of years slid through her mind. Memories of Rathamet and Ceylarius...of meeting friends, and making enemies. Xavier's face flashed clear in her mind, of their spars with one another..of him teaching her, of her nights spent curled up against him feeling safe and protected.
Then of what she felt was a betrayal...by everyone. Finding out she was pregnant..her fight with Kenji...and then feeling completely alone as she finally disappeared.
She opened her eyes and walked to the window, looking out over the city streets. It seemed so long ago..and yet it felt like just yesterday that she had walked into Frank's bar and caught sight of Azrael and Xavier. Two nights later Kenji had shown up, throwing her already mixed emotions into a whirlpool of anger and rage as the past kicked her over and over..stabbed her over and over.
An image of Josh then flashed through her mind. His cocky attitude..his persistance...his smile and gentle hand.
What would life had been like had she chosen then one over the other? It was too late to dwell on that now. She had found herself growing more and more restless, and Sora's little issue had just managed to stamp it all home.
It was time to move on...time to leave and find a place away from the hustle and bustle. The city had been her getaway for a very long time...which city? Any city..they were all the same, weren't they?
No..not this one..where she had refound love, revisited life, and reforged friendships.
How would they react when they received their letters? One for her cousin, one for Josh, and one for Xavier.
They all said basically the same thing. It was time for her to move on. She had found a nice isolated spot way out in the country..further than she had planned on. She wasn't deserting..per se. If they needed her help, they had her cell number. She would come...or search..or steal if the case may be. She also gave each one her new address...
To Josh she would give her thanks...and her love..her hope that all went well with his newfound family. Thanks for being there..thanks for being a friend...a different kind of friend..a true friend.
And to Xavier...words would never explain the depth of love and gratitude she had for him...for the lessons..for being there when she needed to vent or cry. Along with that letter, was the cellphone and the card he had first given her. She wouldn't feel right taking them...
A single tear slid down her cheek, and she quickly brushed it away, before turning and moving towards the door. She stepped out and moved for the car loaded with the kids. Sliding into the driver's seat, she started the car up, and without one look back, she set it in gear..and then...they left.
